A Bit About Us...
We are Mary Beth and Victoria, a mother-daughter team taking on life together one adventure at a time.
Both Mary Beth (the mom) and Victoria (the daughter) have Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome, a genetic connective tissue disorder. Victoria has undergone 14 brain and spinal neurosurgeries over the past 7 years and has a series of other rare conditions which makes life...fun.
As a competitive gymnast and soccer and lacrosse athlete during her youth, Victoria began having joint dislocations, extreme pain, and neurological issues. Diagnosed during college with a Chiari malformation and spinal instability, the surgeries have sought to stabilize her head and spine.
Victoria started a non-profit organization, The Zebra Network, at age 22 to provide awareness, education, and on-the-ground support to patients. She also got involved in the Miss America scholarship organization to spread awareness about invisible illnesses, and shared her monologue, “But You Don’t Look Sick – Making Invisible Illnesses Visible” to raise awareness for the many invisible illnesses and disabilities that people face every day.
From the beginning, Victoria openly shared her daily battles with Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome and her other conditions with the hope that others could relate to the good, the bad, and the ugly. Victoria’s story has been shared across the United States and in over 30 countries and translated into 10 languages. Having to withdraw from college during her surgical journey, Victoria worked hard to finish college while recovering from surgeries, and after lobbying on Capitol Hill for rare disease awareness, she now works as a Director of Operations on Capitol Hill. Over the years, Victoria has found serenity in art and joy in sharing this passion with loved ones and the community.
Mary Beth has worked in higher education for over 20 years and is dedicated to providing quality online learning. Most importantly, Mary Beth is dedicated to supporting Victoria’s medical journey.
Why Oyster Shells?
The beach has always been a special place for us – our happy place. We have many fond memories of summers spent in Ocean City, Maryland with our extended family and special family times in the Outer Banks and at Bald Head Island, North Carolina. During Victoria’s medical journey over the past 7 years, we’ve spent quite a few nights in the hospital – totaling at least a couple of months. Recovery from these surgeries is never easy, with many ups and downs. We can remember one quite difficult hospital stay where we dreamed out loud about being back at the beach – with our toes in the ocean, searching for sea shells.
Wading through the shoreline and searching for the perfect sea shell is one of our favorite things to do together. Over the years, we've collected shells from every trip and have them on display in each of our homes to remember the times spent together.
During a recent trip to the beach (post-surgery #13), we wondered aloud how we could take the peace and healing that our happy place brings us and share it with others. So, we decided to combine our love of sea shells and all things art to create the Sent From The Sea Collection of hand-made decorative oyster shells.
To Make a Long Story Short...
During some of the worst moments in our adventures, we have found comfort and healing in our happy place – the place where the sea meets the sand.
Whether we are trying to find peace and refuge from pain in a hospital room by imagining the ocean or letting the waves physically wash away our worries and heal our souls with sand between our toes, the beach is always the place where we feel most connected and at home.
Our dream is to make the world a little bit brighter, a little bit better one shell at a time. Through the From The Sea Collection, we are excited to share a piece of our happy place with you!
Welcome to Sent From the Art. From the sea to you, each piece is handmade with love. From our hearts to yours, we're glad you're here!
With Love,
Mary Beth & Victoria ♥
